The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) celebrated its 79th Foundation Day as “Khanij Diwas” on 1 March 2026 at its Headquarters in Nagpur.

Smt. Vijayalakshmi Bidari, Divisional Commissioner, Nagpur, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Shri Pankaj Kulshrestha, Controller General, IBM, presided over the function.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. Bidari congratulated IBM on completing 79 years of dedicated service to the nation. She said the Bureau has evolved from a technical advisory body into a national technical regulator. She added that IBM has significantly contributed to the country’s GDP through sustainable mineral development and employment generation. Emphasising the need for balanced growth, she said greater thrust must be given to sustainable mining practices and ecological preservation. She further added that the State Government looks forward towards enhanced cooperation in mining activities in the Nagpur region, particularly in coal, iron ore and limestone.

In his presidential address, Shri Pankaj Kulshrestha said minerals form the backbone of key industries such as power, steel and cement. He said the Government’s focus on responsible mining alongside forest and environmental protection has increased IBM’s responsibilities. He added that IBM will continue to strengthen its regulatory and technical framework to promote sustainable growth in the mining sector.

Dr. Y.G. Kale, Chief Controller of Mines (MDR), said that processes have been streamlined to make services more accessible, responsive and citizen-centric.

Earlier, Shri P.K. Bhattacharjee, Controller of Mines (P&C), welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted IBM’s achievements across various technical domains.

On the occasion, IBM’s flagship publication Indian Minerals Yearbook–2023 and its Hindi magazine Khan Bharati were released. Cleaning and security staff were also honoured for their dedicated service.

The programme was hosted by Smt. Bhumika Karamchandani, Law Officer. Shri Parag Tadlimbekar, SgMG and Technical Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks.
